I'm running the latest Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick 64 bit beta, and it's fantastic! Everything works smooth and buttery is working right off (for those of you also using Ubuntu/Linux, the wireless drivers use the Broadcom drivers, just install is via ethernet connection at first)

The keys and palmrests of smooth, not shiny, and extra comfortable to type on. I transitioned from a full-sized Mac keyboard to this little guy and had no problems adjusting.

The speakers are LOUD at full volume, for such a little thing. To outshine my Acer 3810t with Dolby's Experience '.

The power supply is superbly small.

I've been able to watch hulu, etc, just fine.

Last but not least, youtube 720 p flash is a little jittery, but some updates in the future may fix this (this is after all, linux. Flash runs MUCH faster on Windows). Given that, there's really no need for 720 p as the screen's resolution maxes out out at 1024 by 600, 480 p looks (and works) just fine.

Finally, the battery life is outstanding:)

No regrets!

I also tether it to my Droid X cell phone via usb and Bluetooth so I can surf while on the go. I'm loving this machine right now. It's much more portable than my work laptop. I have used it everywhere including the waiting room at my doctor's office and while waiting to get my car serviced. I'm able to run the following with no problems at all: Hulu, Netflix Streaming, Slingbox, Sunday Night Football streaming, and more.

FYI, I'm using this memory I found on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002IV7FPM?ie=UTF8&tag=pc-notebook-acc-20&creativeASIN=B002IV7FPM
I've read that the newer Asus models can be picky about which memory will work with them.

I haven't tried to run HD videos or any games yet but I'll post an update when I do. Let me know if there are some games or media you want me to try.

The only bummer is that once you upgrade the memory and the OS, the costs gets closer to that of a laptop with a lot more performance and features. The deal maker however is the epic battery life with this netbook. I get around 8 hours with everything turned on (i.e. Bluetooth, and wifi). My work laptop gets about three hours. lol

Don't consider the cheap netbooks! I've used a lot of them. The dual processor 1015pem is the one to get!

** *** UPDATE: MEMORY UPGRADE PROBLEMS *****

If you are having problems with upgrading the memory, try installing the latest firmware. You can download the firmware directly from the Asus support website.

42 of 44 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars 4.5 stars-solid little machine, October 12, 2010 This review is from: ASUS Eee PC 1015PEM-PU17-BK 10.1-Inch Netbook (Black) (Personal Computers) I've been in the market for a netbook, decided to bite the bullet when these became available with the N550 dual core processor. This is my first netbook and only experience with one, so take my review for what it's worth. Had it a few days before I upgraded to 2 GB (no questions asked, absolute must-see) and immediately upgraded the BIOS after setup and running.

Nice little compact size. Relatively thin and not too heavy. The black matte has a rather odd hue, it seems almost having a blueish tint, which I thought was rather peculiar. It attracts finger prints more than I thought it would, maybe not as much as a gloss finish, but they do show up.

Screen seems alright, didn't notice any dead pixels. There is some bloatware, but not an excessive amount. I removed the majority of it including most of the asus Add-ons. The key board takes a little getting used to as I'm accustom him to a full size standard board and this layout has a few different things about it. Overall it dosen ' t seem difficult to use. Mine appears to have a little flex around the G and H keys. With that is a tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-tap-thud when striking the H key. I find this to be a little annoying, along with distracting, hence demotion from a perfect 5--maybe I'm a little harsh, but I was disappointed in the fact.

Haven't really put the battery to test as this sits on my couch and AC power is always within reach. Have had no wireless issues, holds signal well and haven't dropped connection from my linksys router. It does seem to get pretty warm after some use while on your lap, and the fan is a little louder than I expected it to be when spooled up. The heat and fan noise are side notes, and not enough to dock any overall points. Maybe it's actually cool and quiet for its class, like I said, this is my first netbook.

The touchpad responds well and feels pretty intuitive. I don't care for touch pads, but find this one is easy enough. The mouse button clicks could be a little softer to use but I prefer tapping the mouse pad for clicking anyway. Apparently there is suppose to be some "pinch" type zooming with the touchpad. It doesn't appear to work, or maybe I unistalled the software that supports it, or maybe I just don't really know how to make it work. For some reason, the thought of it actually working, doesn't motivated me enough to figure it out.

Webcam works fine, gets the job done. Picture is clear from the other side, so I've been told, and the mic picks up well enough. The speakers are pretty decent for what they are. Its not gonna throw your party, but if three's a crowd, it can provide ample background music.

Overall the more I use it the more I really like it. Super handy for internet conveniences and very portable. My only let downs are: the keyboard issue, windows 7 is pretty limited, but really it does everything these machines are intended to do. I feel at this price point, it should come with 2 gb installed. + $ 400 after the ram upgrade and throw another + $ 80 bucks for real Windows 7 upgrade and you're approaching full size laptop pricing.

Really I am satisfied with it being a netbook, and would recommend it to anybody shopping around for one. It was some adjustment going from my desktop (i7 920/6 GB ram/win 7 pro 64) and then jumping into this little guy. When I remind myself that its only a netbook, I'm pretty happy with it.

HD Display with 1366 x 768 is extremely strong/bright with much less scrolling ... SRS 3D sound is a major improvement and is positively strong ... all the netbook managed without problems streaming (netflix, boxee, hulu, youtube), dual core and wifi n worked perfectly. 9hrs probably a stretch with wifi and blue-tooth; so far in 7hrs with active web media ... No bloatware (hats off to Samsung) ... love the matte screen ... and I recommend upgrading to 2 GB ddr3 for a carry everywhere replacement! Before this was the great success of Samsung NC10 (loved) and with this a Samsung has raised the bar again and at the right price (initially blogs were indicates a base price of $ 429); And Enjoy! help other customers find the most useful reviews This review was helpful?

19 of 21 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars very good price for a netbook 10 inch screen/720 p quality, November 1, 2010 this review is from: Samsung NF310-A01 10.1-inch Netbook (Titan Silver) (Personal computers) this is an amazing netbook for just $ 400-I can't bring myself to rate it any less than 5 stars because of the lack of Nvidia ion2, gigabit ethernet, hdmi or AFG3252, especially since the price could be lower. Other features more than make up for what is missing.

Battery life may be 9 hours if you aren't doing a lot, but with normal browsing through wifi that I have about 6-7 hours. When you put the nf310 to sleep, it takes just 3 seconds to return to the desktop that is awesome. Also the ability to load a usb device when powered off is a bonus if I forget my phone charger on the road. The 10 inch display of 720 p native is awesome and I can't remember any other 10-inch netbooks with this high resolution and a pricetag of $ 400.

Visiting sites with flash enabled and youtube video 720 p all worked flawlessly with the atom dual core cpu. I would not recommend this netbook for gaming, but for the price that I was not expecting to play the latest gpu intensive games and video. Build quality is superb, and the Samsung software package is completed. A simple uninstallation of some extra things I don't need, like Norton and I was happy. The backup and restore software included Samsung was simple to use and reminded me to set a base backup once the nf310 has been configured the way I liked. I was surprised to find MS Office Starter edition also included, which allows me to open word and excel files without any additional installs.

After you have purchased the nf310, I look forward to seeing what Samsung has in the pipeline for their netbook product line-I expect it will add to the end and AFG3252 ion2 in this form factor, but I'm sure the price would be closer to $ 600 + with shorter battery life.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful: 5.0 out of 5 stars want this for me!, 10 December 2010 this review is from: Samsung NF310-A01 10.1-inch Netbook (Titan Silver) (Personal computers) I got this as a Christmas gift for a friend and after adding additional RAM and some software, I wanted to keep it for me! YouTube videos played well and the speakers were great--much better than my Sony laptop. This netbook is necessary for the work of light document and must be very portable in case the documents must be reviewed, while the user is nowhere near home. The size of the keyboard should be quite useful. In all, I had this wrap and put a bow on it or would still be tinkering on it for me.

Incidentally, I had never popped up extra RAM in a computer before, but this couldn't have been easier. I just unscrewed, popped a panel out old and slide into a new one. Simple enough for a chick like me. As another reviewer stated, that it took over an hour to get this up and running because you had to scroll through so many configuration items, but it was really painless (time) and given the ease with which I could change the RAM, I didn't care!

# 8: Acer Aspire One: AO522-BZ897-10.1 Inch HD Netbook (Black Diamond)

14 of 14 people found the following review helpful: 4.0 out of 5 stars Nice little netbook, flat keys, bass speaker volume, January 25, 2011 this review is from: Acer Aspire One AO522-BZ897 10.1-Inch HD Netbook (Black Diamond) (Personal computers) we picked up one of these at Fry's Electronics Sunday 23rd Jan. We have three laptops, but no other netbook experience so it is difficult to make comparisons. My son-in-law took with him I had only a couple of hours playing with it. Given these disclaimers ...

Is a nice little netbook and I were looking for a new computer today, it would pick up one of these for me. Is small, light and battery life is pretty good. With three USB ports and an SD card reader that is well equipped. The thing that made the sale to us was the 1 .3MP webcam because we want to make video calls to Skype with our son-in-law. The quality of the video was great. The screen is very bright, that we had actually dim somewhat on comfort. The only speaker, located under the front left, don't have much volume and was rather "tinny" sound.

The speed is something that I find hard to describe. Certainly is slow compared to our computers, but not something that I couldn't live with. Video worked great. I tried a Netflix streaming video and a youtube video; both have worked great.

My biggest complaint is the flat keys. A small outline would have helped a lot. It would have taken some adjustment type quickly on the keyboard. However the keyboard layout is good. Is not full size but not so small as to be a big adjustment. The size it would be easy to adapt to. The cursor keys, limited space, data are well designed.

The track pad worked fine, no rough surface that many complain (why do they do that?), but none of us are using a track pad in this family. We all choose mouse wireless. It's nice to have three USB ports, because we were able to attack one of these receivers really small mouse in a USB slot and leave it there all the time. Mouse pad buttons track are a single slash (why do they do that too?), but that does not hinder our use of it when we tried.

With Windows 7, which, as a starter version does not allow the wallpaper to be changed. That drove that my son-in-law crazy, but he must learn to live with it.

It would be nice if scored 8 or 10 hours on battery instead of 6, but hey, six hours is double what any of our other handsets reach!

The lid is a magnet for smooth and glossy total footprint (why do they do that?)

I went to remove all the bloatware from it for my son-in-law and guess what? There really wasn't any that I wanted to delete. They have preloaded Skype and a few other useful tools that we would have been loaded, but there was the usual bunch of stuff to delete.

In my opinion, I think this is a pretty neat little machine for a very reasonable price.

Jan 27. I called Acer tech support and learned max RAM is 2 GB and DDR3. The phone support person has not yet had details so couldn't tell me how to access the ram (but said it was through the bottom of the computer), or he could tell me if there was only one RAM slot or two.
